4 lessons • No assessment • Gallery walk consolidation throughout

Before we begin any formal curriculum, we begin by learning how to be in this class. Unit 0 builds the intellectual and social norms that make meaningful mathematical work possible for the rest of the year. For the full story, task sources, and teaching notes, download the complete Unit 0 overview.

Unit 0: Learning to Think Together

0.1 Specializing and Testing

Students try specific examples, hunt for counterexamples, and see how testing cases supports or breaks a conjecture.

0.2 Organizing and Generalizing

Students organize work to reveal patterns, then move to variables to show why a result is always true.

0.3 Convincing Arguments

Using the Chessboard Paths task, students see the difference between “one example” and a full argument of impossibility.

0.4 Visual Reasoning

Students use visual proofs on sum tasks to see that arguments can look different but always aim at understanding.
